Nolan Elementary School 2007-2008 Kindergarten Information

Welcome to Nolan Kindergarten. We are so excited to have your children this year and we are excited to have the opportunity to work with you. We have had five classes of around 20 children for several years and expect those numbers to continue. We would like you to know all about our program here and try to answer some of the more frequently asked questions.

What should your child know before coming to kindergarten?
There are no set knowledge requirements for entrance to kindergarten (the only requirements are for the paperwork to be turned in--the shot and physical exam record (green), copies of the official birth certificate and Social Security card, and 2 proofs of residence), however your child will find transition to kindergarten more comfortable if they:
Know their full name, address, age, telephone number, and birthday
Recognize the capital and lower case letters
Can count to at least 20
Can tie their own shoes
Enjoy listening to stories
Are potty trained
Have used scissors before
Can write their own name

Phase-In
We have a transition program called Phase-In at the beginning of the school year. Your child will attend class only 2 times during the first 2 weeks of school. We take this time of having small numbers of children coming each day to get to know the children, assess the children, and allow them to get aquainted with the school and routines with fewer children around them. This is a county-wide program that has proven to be a valid and effective way to introduce the children to kindergarten and transition them to every day attendance with the whole class.

The phase-in schedule is included and you will get your child's phase-in days assignment at Registration on August 8th.

On the first day of Phase-In, your child will go to a classroom with all teachers and then move in a group to another room. The teachers will go with the groups. The children will get to see all the classrooms and meet all of the teachers as well as see the school-playground, restrooms, cafeteria, etc. They will participate in many fun learning activities. All children will eat lunch during those days. The children will have a snack and quiet time later in the afternoon. Please send a snack and a towel.

On the second day of Phase-In, the children will got to their permanent classroom and teacher. The teacher will notify you of class placement and lists will be posted. Again, all children will have lunch, snack and quiet time.

General Information
School Hours
School begins at 8:45 a.m. It is best to have your child to school between 8:20 and 8:40. All children enter the school building through the center front door and go to the gym where a teacher is on duty after 8:20. All kindergarten children sit together, and the kindergarten teachers go to the gym to walk the children to class.

Lunch
When you pay for lunch, it goes into your child's account. Each time your child eats a cafeteria lunch, they must type in the number they have been assigned by the cafeteria. You can send a lunch from home anytime. You can send a check or cash for lunch. All money sent to school for any reason should be in an envelope with the purpose and child's name written on the outside. Checks should be made payable to Hamilton County Food Service (HCFS) for lunch. They will be sent directly to the cafeteria.

If you need to change how or when the child is going home, please put it in writing...otherwise the child will be sent home their "usual" way.

Day Care
Day care is available at Nolan before and after school. If you want these services, please register with the Day Care Director. The day care program is held in the gym and cafeteria.

Curriculum
Kindergarten children have State Standards and also Hamilton County Standards for Math, P.E., Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, and Music. These will be explained to you at a parent orientation meeting/conference at the beginning of school. We will also explain the report card and answer any questions you may have. A copy of the report card and skills are included. Kindergarten children attend Library once a week, Music twice a week, P.E. twice a week, and Art once a week. Second semester they have Writing to Read for 20 minutes every day.

Birthdays and Special Days
Each teacher handles these events slightly differently, however, each child is special and their birthday is celebrated in some way. The classroom teacher will explain the method of celebration in the individual classes.
The schools are limited to 2 parties for holidays a year -- Christmas and Valentines.

Volunteers
Volunteers are utilized and appreciated very much. Each teacher will explain the needs in her classroom. Opportunities to sign up will e available at Pre-Registration s well as Registration. Volunteers sign in at the Office and proceed to the classrooms.

Field Trips
Field trips are usually scheduled for the whole grade. A note of permission is sent home and must be signed and returned before the child will be permitted to go. A field trip fee is charged to cover admission and bus travel. Each teacher will contact parents to act as chaperones.

Character and Discipline
Each month a character trait is featured. During that month, recipients of the character award for the month are recognized at a character program. The kindergarten classes obey the school-wide rules as well as individual classroom rules. The teachers will explain their class rules and methods of punishment and rewards. An atmosphere of respect and consideration are conducive to the greatest amount of learning.

Parent Conferences
Parent conferences are scheduled school-wide twice during the year. If you would like a conference at any time, please send a note to your child's teacher. They will be happy to meet with you.

We anticipate a wonderful year of learning with your children.
