5th Grade Science Teacher Sandra Partelow is the Environmental Club Coordinator.

The Environmental Club

Sandy Partelow, fifth grade science teacher, has started a new Environmental Club for fifth graders. They meet 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month.

The purpose of the club is to promote environmental awareness in the school and community. The 40 club members have already begun work on several projects.

One project is recycling. Each Friday, four students collect the paper that is to be recycled from the third/fifth grade wing and bag it for parents to take to the recycle center.

The students are also participating in the Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) program. Daily, at "solar noon", students collect weather information and enter the data into an international website.

Fourteen of the students and their parents, along with Mrs. Partelow, will be aiding the town of Signal Mountain in a community Storm Water project, called "Adopt-a-Stream". "We have adopted stream and will work on several Saturday mornings cleaning up and keeping the stream clean."

Bird watching is very popular with the fifth graders, so the club members are now responsible for keeping the two feeders outside Mrs. Partelow's window filled with seed and nectar.

The students and some of the parents will be working with the school's beautification committee to construct a "garden" area between the fifth grade wing and the cafeteria.

Although this is the first year for this club, we are off to a great start!
